Major Furse suggested that there might be

some advantages in reverting to the method of

selection by the appointments Dept. here, on

the ground that we select for similar posts at the Ceylon University College and haffles

College, Singapore. attention to the increasing number of appoint-

ments of Chinese to the University staff and

to the complications to recruitment in this

country which this might involve, it was agreed that it would be better to invite the

University Council to consider Mr. Wood's suggestion that they should recruit in future

through the Universities Bureau. Mr. Mayhew

considered that the Bureau, as now constituted

under Sir Frank Heath, should be able to do

the work satisfactorily.

But when Mr. Calder drew

I put up (at the suggestion of Mr. Calder,

who was about to go on leave) draft despatch

to H.K., which Mr. Mayhew read and approved

before starting on his West Indian tour. 1

suggest that we might send this over to Mr. Wood

for his observations, reference No.1, or at any

rate let him see a copy of the despatch when it

has gone.
